Course Eligibility

  • Must be unemployed or on a low income (less than £20,319)
  • Can be in receipt of a benefit or not (UC/JSA/ESA)
  • A UK resident for 3 years or more
  • Aged 19 or older on or before 31 August 2024
  • Must not be in any other form of education or training course 
  • The programme is NOT available in the following regions: Greater Manchester, Greater London, Liverpool, West and South Yorkshire, North of Tyne, Tees Valley, Cambridge and Peterborough, Bristol, Bath, Birmingham, The Black Country & Coventry. 

Course Description

This is a 2 week remote course. You will learn from home with guidance from a tutor via a Microsoft Teams meeting.

You must have access to a laptop or computer.

You will have a live session with a tutor (10am – 4pm) We do have some flexibility for school runs.

Units Covered:

  • Exploring new and emerging technologies.
  • How technology impacts society and how to create it.
  • Cybersecurity and how to maintain it.
  • Digital Skills career progression, how it’s valued by employers.

Once you have completed the Digital Technologies side of the course, we will issue a voucher code via email which allows you to log in anytime to complete the Foundation in Business Skills section of the course at your own pace.

You must complete the Level 2 Digital course first.

Foundation in Business Skills Units:

  • The basics of starting a business – from idea generation and business planning to building a strategy and identifying the target market;
  • The financial aspects of a business, including initial set-up costs and financing options, as well as ongoing financial needs and requirements, such as cash flow, forecasting, keeping accounts and budgeting;
  • How marketing can benefit a business by attracting and retaining customers; this module also includes useful information regarding social media advertising;
  • How to effectively create a brand for your business, to ensure that it is attractive within the marketplace;
  • What to consider when employing staff, such as recruitment, training, legal considerations and getting the best from your employees;
  • Common business administrative requirements, such as the type of insurance that the business may benefit from, what taxes are required and how to pay them and the importance of keeping abreast of appropriate legal and regulatory issues that affect the business;
  • How to effectively use technology in your business, including the importance of a well designed website in attracting customers.
