Course Eligibility

  • Aged 19 or older on or before 31 August 2023
  • Learners need to have the following ID: Passport or Birth Certificate (the right to live and work in the UK)
  • Out of Date Passport - Can be accepted if you can provide a letter with your name/address within the last 3 months.
  • Living within GMCA postcode
  • Having resided in the UK for more than 3 years
  • Learners without a full Level 3 qualification OR Learners that hold a full Level 3 qualification or higher and earn below £23,104
  • Must be in receipt of qualifying benefits if unemployed
  • Must not currently be in receipt of government funding for another qualification

Course Description

This is a remote course where you will learn from home with guidance from a tutor. You must live in the Greater Manchester region. 

As this is an online course, you must have access to either a tablet, laptop or PC. A smart phone will not suffice.

This qualification is designed for learners who want to increase their knowledge and understanding of
autism. Successful completion of this qualification will allow learners to develop in-depth knowledge and
understanding of autism, which would support progression onto appropriate qualification and into
employment within the health and social care sector.

The objectives of this qualification are to help learners to understand:

• How to adopt a positive approach to supporting individuals with autism

• The current legislative framework relating to individuals with autism and how different theories have
developed over time

• How to support and manage transitions for individuals with autism
• The range of therapeutic interventions and support available for individuals with autism and co-
occurring conditions• How to support communication and social interaction for individuals with autism

• How to develop an understanding of how individuals with autism may be vulnerable and the support
worker’s role and responsibilities relating to safeguarding according to legislative requirements.

Autism is described by the National Autistic Society as a complex, lifelong developmental disability that
typically appears during early childhood and can impact a person’s social skills, communication,
relationships, and self-regulation.
Individual preference regarding terminology used for an individual on the autism spectrum may vary and must be valued and respected.

This qualification and associated materials are reviewed regularly to ensure that they remain fit for purpose, however, terms tend to change. The National Autistic Society provides a useful source for accurate terms and reference and can be found on their website.

Below are the mandatory units that will be covered:
Unit 1: Autism in context.
Unit 2: Positive behavioural support for individuals with autism.
Unit 3: Understand support and management of transitions for individuals with autism.
Unit 4: Therapeutic interventions and support available for individuals with autism and co – occurring conditions.
Unit 5: Communication and social interaction with individuals with autism.
Unit 6: Safeguarding and resilience in autism.

Delivery

Live delivery is on a Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday for 2 hours (10am – 12pm) via our e learning portal “equal” or Google Classroom. You will then have work to complete in your own time. The course will run for 12 weeks.

This is a rolling course, meaning once your enrolment process is complete we can start you.
