About Work For All

Our founder William Booth was passionate about helping people to work and set up many innovative employment projects. He believed that if people were skilled and employable they could help themselves out of poverty - a case of a "hand up" rather than a "hand out". The Salvation Army went on to open the nation's first-ever Labour Exchange in 1890.

Today, people who are unemployed need more help than ever to find and stay at work. Every person has worth and it is our desire to help all who are willing to work, irrespective of their starting point.

Becoming part of a community where you are building your confidence, job skills, and discovering new things about yourself - these are some of the positive benefits we've seen people gain from being in work, volunteering or taking part in a work-experience placement through the help of The Salvation Army.

We offer support to help people become job-ready, to get a job and to stay in work and we do so as a locally-based organisation operating from more than 1,000 locations. As such we deliver three subcontracts within the Work Programme, helping people furthest from employment or who have been unemployed for a long time, through every step of their journey to be job ready and to stay in work. Many people we support have complex needs.

We also provide short-term work-experience placements, which are arranged at a local level, this includes working with local Job Centres and independent welfare to work providers. Participants benefit from gaining work experience, a recent reference and in gaining confidence - and they also help their local community. No placements are in a place of paid work and we trust our local representatives to provide valuable professional experience.

If you're involved in a placement at The Salvation Army, you are more than likely to be helping others - this can be a powerful transformative experience. Anyone who comes to The Salvation Army will receive assistance based solely on their need and our capacity to provide help. We respect and value the rich diversity of our staff, volunteers and all people in the communities in which we serve - whatever their age, background, gender, faith, culture, sexual orientation or circumstances.

We know many people who have secured permanent employment subsequent to their placement with us; who have said that the time they spent on placement with us contributed greatly to their job-seeking experience and credentials.
